The Darkening Dream by Andy Gavin

My Rating: Restricted
My Score: 2 out of 5

This story starts with a great deal of potential.  The first few chapters are even reminiscent of Stephen King’s 'SALEM’S LOT.  However, any similarities to the King of Horror disappear as the story progresses.

What starts out as a chilling vampire tale quickly becomes a convoluted story including angels and various cultures and religions.  It’s clear the author did a great deal of research while penning this novel.  Unfortunately many readers will have to do research to fully understand the story.

The twist ending is not so much a twist as a moment of complete insanity.  Nothing in the story even hinted at an ending like this.  Even Sarah, the main character, is out of character when she makes her final decision.  The last five chapters are so out of sync with the rest of the story that they could be from another book.

Worst of all is the blatant and unnecessary abuse towards animals.  The violence is gut-wrenchingly cruel and inappropriate.  Animal lovers will be mortified.  Anyone with a special fondness for horses must avoid this book.

With such a promising beginning this story is very disappointing.
